In 1873, the Town of Mooresville was incorporated, with 25 families, and several others living within its bounds. The town grew throughout the twentieth century, and like many small towns in North Carolina its economy was textile and furniture based. The town has experienced rapid population growth in recent years, and considerable housing and shopping-center development as well.

Mooresville is the home to the corporate headquarters of Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse, and is perhaps best known as the home of many NASCAR racing teams, which earned the city the nickname “Race City USA.” The city is home to more than 60 NASCAR teams and racing related businesses including: Memory Lane Motor sports and Historical Automotive Museum. The North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame serves as the town’s official visitor’s center.
